:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Freeman Gilbert -- Stirring--Intellectually and Emotionally. : Joan of Arc has intrigued me since 3rd grade, when I fell under the spell of the Middle Ages. A girl from the sticks, a farm gal of humble origin, not well educated--she hears voices she is convinced come from God, instructing her to lead troops against the finest army on earth. She assures the boy prince to become crowned and manly. She leads the soldiers to an "impossible" victory. And is eventually condemned by the church and at 19 burned at the stake. Few fiction writers would dare pen a yarn like that. Yet it happened! And Shaw gives it literary dignity. This and MAN AND SUPERMAN (with "Don Juan In Hell" as an inner drama) are Shaw's greatest masterworks. He gives the story of Joan a philosophic depth adding seasoning to this feast.
